Thanksgiving Traditions

Its almost that time of year where some decorate for Christmas in the early days of November, then celebrate Thanksgiving for a few days, and continue on the holly jolly bells until January.

Most importantly, this time of year tends to bring people together. Whether that be for some turkey, charity work, or NFL football games – this time of year is full of traditions. The team at Family Wealth Partners enjoys our own office traditions of a chili day and shared pumpkin rolls, but we wanted to share our individual family traditions with you!

I love Thanksgiving and the focus of giving thanks.  I love the stuffing, cranberry relish, and pumpkin pie.  One of my fondest memories of Thanksgiving was the year new neighbors moved in next door the week of Thanksgiving.  My precious wife Nancy asked if we could invite them to dinner with us.  It was so precious sharing that time with new friends that were our neighbors for about two years yet 2 decades later I cherish my relationship with Tony & Patty that all began by offering thanks together.

Favorite things about the Thanksgiving holiday is family time and sweet potato casserole!

Most people think about turkey for this holiday, but my family always pairs it with a delicious Honey Baked Ham, my personal favorite. Growing up, we always went to the mountains the day after Thanksgiving to cut down our Christmas tree. I have fond memories of that time with family.

Both mine and Emily’s parents still live in Asheville, and Thanksgiving is sometimes the only time of the year that both our families (parents, siblings, nephews/nieces) will all be in the same city at the same time. Being able to get together and share a meal with both of our entire families on the same day is very special!

My favorite tradition is simply spending time with my family and while that has changed over the years it’s still the best! When I was a child we would go to my grandmother’s house and all of my cousins would be there.  We would eat, go to the parade in downtown Charlotte, go eat again and then go to the movies. As I got older we started having Thanksgiving dinner at my parent’s house.  Now we host dinner at my house and then go Christmas tree shopping in the mountains the day after Thanksgiving. Last year my son, Brandon, proposed to his girlfriend, Kailey, while we were at the Christmas Tree Farm so now we have a new tradition of going to the same tree farm every year on the day after Thanksgiving.

I love Thanksgiving for so many reasons but mainly the warmness you feel around this time. It’s the first big holiday before Christmas and it creates so many warn fuzzy feelings for me. Growing up I had a very large family and traveled to so many homes for the holidays. Now that I have my own little family, we get to create our own memories and traditions and its such a huge joy! The first year my husband and I were married, we decided to take a mountain trip every year the day after Thanksgiving. It has been so fun keeping that tradition and traveling with my sons now too.

I love Thanksgiving because I get to reunite and spend time with family members that I don’t see very often. It also signals the start of the holiday season which means the Christmas decorations go up shortly after!
